Governor Gretchen Whitmer held a campaign rally outside the Superior Dome in Marquette on Saturday afternoon, along with U.S. Senator Gary Peters, and other Democratic politicians.
Several hundred people turned out for the event, which came as polls statewide show her once 17-point lead over Republican challenger Tudor Dixon has dwindled and the race is now a virtual dead heat. Whitmer, in an interview with RRN News, says she stands on her record.
“We’ve been really smart about getting our fiscal house in order,” Whitmer said. “That’s why I do think we can still do a retirement tax repeal. We still can give working families relief through tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit. We’ve built budgets that are responsible, made historic investments, and put us in a position to do more.”
The governor says she is most proud of the increased spending in K-12 education under her watch.
“We’ve made historic investments in public education,” Whitmer said. “Wrapping our kids with metal health support, and supporting our teachers, who are arguably some of our most important jobs in our society. We have made record investments on all of these fronts.”
Whitmer says she understands why some people may vote against her because of decisions she made to close down schools and businesses during the pandemic. Dixon has been hammering her on the campaign trail, saying that Whitmer closed schools and businesses unnecessarily, and for far too long.
The governor says she did the best she could with the information she had at the time.
“I understand,” Whitmer said about some people planning to vote against her because of that issue. “It’s been a hard few years. Every single one of us has been through a lot. I understand that people are exhausted. I understand that this has been a frustrating couple of years. Trust me, I feel it, too. And yet, we’ve got to stay focused on solving problems, and finding areas where we can do work together, and make Michigan a place for future generations to thrive, too.”
The latest poll released Friday by Mitchell Research and Communications shows Whitmer with 49% support, and Dixon with 47%. Dixon also campaigned in Marquette earlier this month,
The two women will take part in their final debate Tuesday night in Detroit.
