Northern Michigan University Athletics, in partnership with the NMU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Mining Journal Cheer Club, will host their annual Teddy Bear Toss during the first intermission of Saturday’s hockey game between the Wildcats and University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, Dec. 4.
Last year, a record 623 bears and other stuffed toys were donated during a socially distanced drive-by teddy bear toss outside the Berry Events Center, which included Wildcat fans tossing bears through basketball hoops into a miniature outdoor hockey rink.
“The annual Teddy Bear Toss is very important for local families and provides an opportunity to make a positive difference,” said Director of Athletics Forrest Karr. “Last year’s event required a little creativity and flexibility, and the student-athlete volunteers were exceptional. This year, we are grateful to have fans in attendance and look forward to bringing back the original format.”
Fans are encouraged to bring their bear or stuffed toy to toss on the ice at the start of the first intermission during Saturday’s game. Fans who bring a donation will be given a voucher for a free ticket to any remaining 2021-22 basketball home date.
The Wildcat hockey team will host top-ranked UMD this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3-4, with both games set to face off at 6:37 p.m.
Tickets to the series can be purchased online at tickets.nmu.edu or in-person at any NMU ticketing outlet.
