Eastern U.P. State Sen. Wayne Schmidt was honored as Legislator of the Year by the Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance (MTGA) at its annual meeting held virtually on October 28.
“Michigan’s trails get residents and visitors alike outdoors and promote an appreciation for our state’s natural resources,” said Schmidt, R-Traverse City. “It’s an honor to be recognized as an advocate for Michigan’s trails, which include thousands of miles of state-designated land trails and coastal and inland water trails.”
Each year MTGA presents awards to individuals or organizations who have gone above and beyond to expand, support and promote Michigan’s trail network. MTGA’s board of directors submits nominations for these awards, and then decides collectively on recipients.
Schmidt received a nomination for his long-standing support for Northern Michigan and Upper Peninsula trails, as well as his understanding and appreciation for the benefits that trails offer to communities and local businesses.
