Why are coronavirus cases increasing in Marquete County, and in the Upper Peninsula as a whole?
The Marquette County Health Department put out an explanation, suggesting that there are a number of factors involved. The department believes that increased tourism has been one factor, as well as cases coming from Wisconsin, where restrictions were largely lifted in May by a Supreme Court decision there.
But the health department also believes that people in our area have been ignoring some of the social distancing and other precautions, including the wearing of masks. Officials also blame “pandemic fatigue”, that is, many people have grown tired of having to deal with restrictions and other precautions in their daily lives.
The number of positive test results, as well as the number of deaths, have increased in recent weeks across the U.P.
As of Saturday, the U.P. had seen nearly 5,000 total cases and 94 deaths since the pandemic began in March. The vast majority of those have occurred within the past month The MCHD press release is posted below:
