The Inland Seas Education Association schooner ship is in Escanaba’s Marina.
It will be available Friday for a couple of events aimed at teaching people about what’s out there in Little Bay deNoc. The “Utopia” is a 77-foot schooner that has arrived from Traverse City.
Bob Pawlis with Inland Seas was setting up at the marina Wednesday night. He says that the ship was built in 1946 in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and has sailed literally around the world. Now, it travels around the Great Lakes and does research with school kids.
“We have an Robotic Operated Vehicle program,” Pawlis told RRN News. “So we have kids come out for a session where three kids are assigned to an instructor. The task is to make an ROV that will retrieve a tennis ball or ping pong ball (from the bottom of the bay).”
There are two programs scheduled for Friday afternoon that are FREE and open to both kids and adults. The first runs from 1 until 3, and the other runs from 3:30 to 5:30…and will be done right along the dock. Reservations are required, and Gregg Bruff with the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service says they only have a few spots still available.
