At approximately 12:15 pm, Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Negaunee Post, responded to a multiple vehicle crash on M-28 approximately 5 miles west of Seney.
The investigation determined that a westbound Subaru, driven by a 67 year old Traverse City man rear ended a westbound Ford pickup pulling a covered trailer being driven by a 41 year old man from Thompson, Ohio. After the initial collision, the Subaru then crossed the centerline and was broadsided by an eastbound Buick being operated by a 52 year old man from Royal Oak, MI.
The 67 year old Traverse City man, a 65 year old female passenger in his vehicle, and a 52 year old female passenger of the eastbound Buick received serious injuries in the crash. All three were transported to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for treatment.
The crash occurred on slippery snow covered roads with reduced visibilities due to the falling and wind driven snow. The crash caused a chain reaction with other motorists who came upon the crash suddenly. A total of 8 vehicles were damaged with numerous other vehicles going into the ditch to avoid collisions. As a result M-28 was closed for 3 hours between M-77 in Seney and M-94 in Shingleton. The roadway is now open.
The Michigan State Police reminds drivers to practice safe wintertime driving practices. Slow down, maintain safe travel distances between vehicles and be mindful that roadway conditions and visibilities can change quickly.
The Michigan State Police were assisted at the scene by Seney Twp First Responders, Seney Twp Fire, the Schoolcraft County Sheriff Dept, Sault Tribe PD and Luce County Ambulance.
