There is an excitement in the air in the twin cities of Marinette, Wis. and Menominee, Mich. as they could win a $500,000 community makeover. Deluxe Corporation, historically known for its check printing, has created a community revitalization contest and reality television series known as The Small Business Revolution.
Marinette and Menominee, situated on the shoreline of Green Bay, are two communities that act as one. It hasn’t always been that way, with a rivalry dating back over a century. However, these two towns have embraced their symbiotic relationship, and are working together to win the top spot.
On January 10, Amanda Brinkman will visit the region along with the Deluxe team from The Small Business Revolution. Their mission is to scout the joint communities, learn about small businesses, and discover the uniqueness of the area. Ultimately, they are looking for a community that matches up with their own goals for success and how they can match their skills with the needs of local businesses.
“This experience doesn’t just mean a few small businesses are going to benefit from a reality TV show,” said Zak Aubert, Owner of Wind Rose North Outfitters, in Menominee. “What this means is our entire community will benefit from a great company, Deluxe Corporation, helping us start to positively rebrand our community, Marinette, Menominee, and the surrounding communities for the next generation.”
In recent years, Deluxe has reinvented its business model to begin offering marketing services to small businesses. They have turned their appreciation for small businesses into a stewardship. For the Small Business Revolution contest, they received over 12,000 applications for communities across the entire United States, the field has already been narrowed to 10, but there can only be one winner of the community makeover.
As the only contestants from the Midwest, the small towns of Marinette and Menominee are seeking the help of others in the state of Wisconsin and Michigan to help them become the ultimate prize winners. To prepare, the meeting room of Murray’s Irish Pub was packed with over 100 individuals. Some represented businesses that have been part of the community for a century, some just decades, and some just starting up. They all had one thing in common: optimism in the rebranding of the joint cities.
Communities who have won the makeover in the past have cited a renewed vigor in the spirit of its residents and an uptick in tourism. That is the fate these border city residents hope for, and the reason they attended the meeting. The purpose was to explain how truly unique this opportunity is, prepare citizens for the networking event, and give them the tools to help the cities move forward in the competition.
