U-P State Senator Tom Casperson introduced a measure this week that would authorize the Mackinac Bridge Authority to acquire the proposed utility tunnel under the Straits. The authority would then lease the tunnel to Enbridge Energy for its oil and gas lines.
One environmental group is crying foul, though. Food and Water Watch says Casperson’s bill will also allow the Enbridge pipeline to remain under the straits for up to a decade while the tunnel is built. The group says both Governor-elect Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General-elect Dana Nessel have pledged to shut down the line when they take office in January.
