U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) today released the following statement following Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court on Saturday afternoon:
“I take very seriously the Senate role of advise and consent, and in evaluating a Supreme Court nominee, I think first and foremost about how they will serve the people of Michigan.
“When I examine his record, I do not see fairness – I see a partisan ideologue who sides with large corporations and special interests, not Michiganders. He’s ruled against workers’ hard-fought collective bargaining rights, important environmental protections that keep our air clean and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that is meant to safeguard Americans from bad actors on Wall Street. Judge Kavanaugh has ruled in favor of gutting net neutrality rules that help small businesses and startups compete and supported unlimited campaign contributions from foreign nationals, in effect drowning out the voices of voters in American elections. And I believe if confirmed, Judge Kavanaugh will spearhead the continued erosion of rights for American women.
“Even before Dr. Ford’s brave and credible testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, I concluded that Judge Kavanaugh was not the right choice for the nation’s highest court. I voted against Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation because I believe he will provide only more division in our country and cast a cloud over the decisions of Supreme Court for years to come.”
