At around 8:00 a.m. on September 19, the Ishpeming Police Department responded to a personal injury accident and the intersection of US-41 and Hickory St. in the City of Ishpeming.
The accident involved an Ishpeming Public School Bus full of elementary students and a black Dodge Avenger.
The bus was driven by 24-year-old Daniel James Rantanen and the Avenger was driven by 25-year-old Jamie Leigh Rosten.
The bus was crossing US-41 on Hickory traveling northbound and the Avenger was traveling westbound on US-41.
The posted speed limit was 45 mph. The Avenger hit the school bus near the rear wheels, causing the bus to spin and strike a utility pole on the northwest corner of the intersection.
Through interviews conducted of witnesses, evidence obtained and evaluated at the scene and evidence and expertise furnished by Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit, it was determined Rosten was traveling at a rate higher than the speed limit and at such a rate the Rosten forfeited her right of way.
A citation for Careless Driving will be issued to Rosten.
