The Gwinn Area Community Schools is hosting a Grand Opening for the new tennis court facility upgrade on Thursday, August 30th, at 4:30 p.m. at Gwinn Middle/High School. The community is welcome to come and participate in the event as a part of the district’s “Meet the Modeltowners” and “Stuff the Bus” Thursday evening.
“Tennis can be a lifelong sport, and one that encourages character traits such as honesty and integrity, tenacity and passion, not to mention straight up joy!”, said Joe Boogren, Forsyth Township Supervisor and former GACS Board member. A proponent of community tennis, he is glad to see the new tennis courts completed at the Gwinn Area Community Schools. To promote youth tennis in the community Mr. Boogren is donating 10 Wilson Junior racquets to be given away at the event.
The tennis courts were funded through a community effort in the form of a “Yes!” vote for the district’s 2016 bond election. This community support played a vital role in funding the tennis courts and other projects within the district such as new bleachers in the gymnasium and new technology last year.
GHS Girls Varsity tennis Coach Darcia Mattson claims that the new tennis courts sends a message that positively affects the way that the team plays. “We had the best results in six years with our Home Opener,” says Mattson of the 3-4 close meet with Munising on August 22. “It sends a message to the players that we believe in them and we care about tennis. These courts are beautiful and we are playing better tennis on them. No doubt about it!”
