Attorney General Bill Schuette, Michigan’s Republican gubernatorial nominee, today announced that he has selected Lisa Posthumus Lyons as his Lieutenant Governor running mate.
Lyons, named as one of the “50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan” by the Grand Rapids Business Journal and as a “rising Republican star” by MLive, served three-terms as member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2011-2016.
Lyons was a leader on education issues in the legislature where she was chair of the House Education Committee and on election issues as well, serving as the leader of the House Elections & Ethics Committees. Lyons served as Assistant Majority Floor Leader in the House and is now the Kent County Clerk / Register of Deeds, a post to which she was elected in 2016.
“In Lisa Posthumus Lyons we have a person of great talent. Her service in the Michigan legislature was exceptional. She led the education committee and understands that reading is the key ingredient for Michigan’s ability to grow,” said Schuette. “I have known Lisa for many years. I value her leadership on policy in the state legislature and admire her as a mother and wife with a great commitment to her family. In fact, Lisa comes from a family of accomplishment and service to Michigan. Lisa will be an outstanding Lieutenant Governor and I am proud she has joined our campaign to take Michigan forward as a growth state and paycheckstate.”
Lyons, 38, said she is excited to join the Republican ticket because Michigan faces a choice: do we go forward or back?
“When I entered the legislature, Michigan was flat on its back. But we worked hard, reformed government, and got Michigan back on its feet,” said Lyons.
“When Bill Schuette asked me to be his running mate I did not hesitate because I worked too hard on Michigan’s comeback to let Gretchen Whitmer take us back to the Lost Decade.”
“This election is a choice: do we move forward and reach higher, or do we go back? I am here to say that we are not going to let Michigan go back,” said Lyons.
“We are fighting for the families of this state who cannot afford the higher taxes and fees that Gretchen Whitmer will bury them with, making it harder to afford healthcare, college tuition, or even just food on the table. With Bill Schuette as governor and Donald Trump as president, Michigan’s economy will grow with more population and bigger paychecks.”
In addition to her efforts on education and election reform, Lyons is also known for her efforts to protect the victims of sexual assault. While in the legislature, Lyons’bill allowing a victim of sexual assault that results in pregnancy to petition for an end of parental rights by the assailant was passed into law as Public Act 96 of 2016.
