Detectives from the Michigan State Police at the Negaunee Post have positively identified the remains of the deceased man found in a house fire at N5113 ET RD as 61-year-old Joseph Ray Roop of Eben Junction.
The identification was made by DNA. Troopers from the Munising Detachment were dispatched to the scene at approximately 1:00 am Saturday after fire fighters with the Rock River Township Fire Department discovered human remains inside the residence. The structure was completely destroyed as a result of the fire.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but foul play is not suspected.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by detectives with the Michigan State Police Fire Investigator Unit, Rock River Township Fire Department and Alger County EMS.
