A new grocery store opens this week in Escanaba.
Aldi will officially open its 20-thousand square-foot store Thursday morning. It’s the first Aldi store to be built in the Upper Peninsula, located on Third Avenue North next to the new Meijer store.
Aldi is known for its name-brand products and the fact that you have to pay 25 cents for a shopping cart…you get that money back when you return the cart.
You also have to bag your own groceries, and you have to bring your own shopping bags…or pay for one of their bags.
The new store continues a major change in Escanaba retail shopping. While Meijer opened its Super Center in May, Super One Foods, K-Mart, Staples, and JC Penney have all closed their Escanaba locations within the past year.
Aldi’s ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 8:25 Thursday morning.
