Feb. 2 is Groundhog Day. Groundhog Day can be a fun, little distraction for many area residents during our long U.P. winter. For many, though, it can be a sad reminder that six more weeks of winter only means more hardship and pain.
Every community has residents who have fallen on hard times. Those struggles become even greater in winter.
Many residents are either forced to live in a cold home because they can’t afford to pay their bills, or they go without food or medicine so they can pay for heat, or all of the above.
The good news is the Community Action Agency Walks for Warmth give communities in Menominee, Delta and Schoolcraft counties a chance to help their neighbors.
This event raises funds for folks who are having a difficult time paying their home heating bills. I’m Cathy Pearson, and this year’s walks are set for February 24 in Menominee, Delta & Schoolcraft Counties.
If you want to help, download a pledge sheet at www.mdscaa.org, make a donation &/or come to one of our walks. All money raised is used for heat assistance in the county in which it is raised. Walks are set for 10 a.m. at both the Elks Lodge, Escanaba, & at the Menominee Senior Center. A walk is scheduled on the same day at 9 a.m. at the Manistique Senior Center.
Thanks for helping. It will give you a nice, warm feeling. For more information call me at 786-7080.
