Police Have Suspect In LaPalme’s Store Break-In

A person of interest in the breaking and entering of the LaPalmes Country Corner is in custody in the Delta County Jail on the charge of unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle out of Delta County.

The arrest took place Friday (7/6/18) at a residence in Escanaba by officers of the Escanaba Public Safety.

This is part of an ongoing investigation involving Escanaba Public Safety, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Postal Inspection Service.

The subject is believed to have stolen a pickup in Escanaba City and drive to LaPalmes Country Corner in Wells Township to commit the breaking and entering late Sunday (7/1/18) or early Monday (7/2/18) morning.

The stolen property from LaPalmes Country Corner was loaded into the stolen pickup and the pickup later crashed on the Little West Road (Country Road SW) and overturned into the Little West Branch of the Escanaba River. The abandoned, crashed and stolen pickup was later discovered by a logger on Monday (7/2/18) around 3:00 p.m. upside down in the river. The Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recovered numerous identifiable/personal items of the suspect that has been arrested along with property stolen from the LaPalmes Country Corner.

Coincidentally, on Monday (7/2/18) at 2:48 p.m., a pickup was stolen from the parking lot of the Blackrocks Brewery in the City of Marquette and later recovered in the City of Escanaba. It is suspected that the same male subject also stole this vehicle to return to Escanaba. If it is the same subject, it is unknown how he got from southern Marquette County to Marquette City.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help to see if someone had seen or assisted the subject attempting to get from southern Marquette County to the City of Marquette last Monday (7/2/18) morning or early last Monday afternoon. The subject who stole the pickup out of Marquette City is a white man and was wearing a light colored, possibly white short sleeve shirt, medium toned color pants (possibly light green) and a similar colored baseball hat. He also had a yellow backpack on. Prior to stealing the pickup in Marquette City, the male was walking westbound on the north sidewalk of Washington Street.

Anyone with information on these incidents is requested to contact the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office at (906)225-8470 or email Ilarson@mqtco.org. These investigations are ongoing and evidence is being processed by the Michigan State Police Forensic Labs.
