The man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman as the pair criss-crossed the central U-P has been charged in federal court. Eric Ruska faces one count of kidnapping, according to the U-S attorney’s office.
He’s accused of assaulting Lee Ann Wilmoth while the two were on a fishing trip on Delta County’s Garden Peninsula. Wilmoth reportedly told police that he threatened to kill her and her family if she did not comply.
Police started searching for the two after getting a missing person complaint a week ago Sunday from Wilmoth’s family. Police finally found the pair early last Friday at a Munising convenience store.
Local Three News reports that Ruska was placed under arrest and held at the Marquette County jail over the weekend while Wilmoth was taken to U.P. Health System- Marquette for evaluation.
Ruska will be criminally charged and prosecuted at the federal level by the assistant United States Attorney’s Office, for the Western District of Michigan, Marquette Office.
Ruska is being charged at the federal level because it took place in multiple jurisdictions on federal land, spanning across multiple counties including Delta County, Schoolcraft County, Alger County and Marquette County.
