A downstate lawmaker is working to make sure the western Upper Peninsula gets some relief from the severe weather that hit the area back in the spring.
State Senator Goeff Hansen is pushing legislation that would provide 1-point-9 million dollars for Ironwood and Gogebic County to cover some of the costs of repairing infrastructure damage in the area. Hansen says that the federal government has denied the western U-P any help, even though several northern Wisconsin counties that were affected by the same storm were granted relief from FEMA. Hansen says that Gogebic County didn’t qualify for aid under federal rules because its total damage did not cross a certain financial threshold.
He has circulated a letter which he says has been signed by all 38 state senators on both sides of the aisle demanding that the western U-P get some help. Hansen serves the Muskegon area and other parts of western lower Michigan.
