Mike Dagenais and I went down to Cheboygan on Tuesday to broadcast the Escanaba High School baseball team’s district tournament game against Petoskey. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Eskymos, who certainly played well enough to win. While the loss ended Escanaba’s season, it began what will be wild couple of weeks for me.
The high school spring sports season is the shortest of all three seasons, and it goes into a fever pitch as we head into June. The golf and tennis seasons end today, and the track U.P. Finals are on Saturday in Kingsford. Then, the only two sports still going are baseball and softball. And we have some real good teams in our area ready to make a run.
The Eskymo softball team and the Gladstone softball team both made it to Michigan State University and the Final Four last summer, and they both could make it there this time. Jenna Steinhoff is pitching well for the Braves, and the Eskymos have a great 1-2 punch in the circle in Katie Ross and Gabi Salo. They are fun to watch!
Rapid River’s softball team is a darkhorse in Division Four. George Kanyuh’s team has a good pitcher in Brittany Schwartz, and girls like Richelle Vandeville and Erica Rubick can smack the ball all over the park!
The Gladstone baseball team is also capable of making a long run, with Jared Crow and Clay Cole doing a nice job on the mound and guys like Tyson Seymour and Daniel Martin hitting well. An unsung hero is Braeden Lamberg, who has become a solid catcher, and has shown an uncanny ability to put down drag bunts for base hits. A big weapon!
It’s going to be a fun few weeks, and I want to publicly thank our business sponsors for giving us the financial support to make these road trips. Of course, I also thank MikeyD for driving, helping me with the broadcasts, and taking video clips for our web site. And thanks (in advance) to Susie Larson and Don Curran for their extra work in the newsroom!
Before I close, a big congratulations to the Escanaba Eskymos for their U.P. championships in both boys and girls golf! Coach Brian Robinette is on Cloud Nine as you read this blog entry this morning!
